Structural Engineering

Students study static forces, types of structures, and material strength. Students research various types of bridges, dams, and towers. Students build and test basic structural shapes with various materials. Students use the results of their tests and research to design and build a structure to meet specific requirements.

Lesson 1: Intro to Structural Engineering

Students learn basic science concepts related to structural engineering. Students also explore the history of structural engineering and structural engineering related careers. Students summarize the information they learn from lecture and research in a written report.

Lesson 2: Static Force

Students explore tension, compression, and torque forces. Students learn methods for calculating the amount of each type of force acting on a material under various conditions. Students conduct test to measure the amount of each type of force various materials can withstand under various conditions.

Lesson 3: Basic Structures

Students build and test basic structures that form the basis for various structures. Students test various basic structure designs to determine the relative strength of each design.

Lesson 4: Towers

Students design, build, and test a tower to meet specific criteria. Students redesign their tower as necessary until producing a final product and design that meets all the criteria. Students write and present a report describing their tower's design and performance.

Lesson 5: Bridges

Students design, build, and test a bridge to meet specific criteria. Students redesign their bridge as necessary until producing a final product and design that meets all the criteria. Students write and present a report describing their bridge's design and performance.

Lesson 6: Dams

Students design, build, and test a structure to meet specific criteria. Students redesign their structure as necessary until producing a final product and design that meets all the criteria. Students write and present a report describing their dam's design and performance.
