Planes and Gliders

Students explore forces related to flight and the Bernoulli Principle. Students design, build, and test airfoils, gliders, and rubber-band powered airplanes. Equipment and materials include an airfoil tester, a glider catapult, materials for airfoils, materials for gliders, and materials for rubber-band airplanes.

Lesson 1: Intro to Aerospace

Students learn basic science concepts related to aerospace technology. Students also explore the history of aerospace and aerospace careers. Students summarize the information they learn from lecture and research in a written report.

Lesson 2: Airfoil Design

Students explore the Bernoulli principle and airfoil design. Students build and test an airfoil from a given pattern. Students use the result of their test and the information learn from other sources o design and build an airfoil that meets specific criteria.

Lesson 3: Paper Airplane

Students create and test a variety of paper planes from pre-made designs. Students use the results of their tests to design a new plane that meets specific criteria. Students build, test, and redesign their paper planes as necessary. Students write a report explaining their new planes' design and performance.

Lesson 4: Glider Design

Students create and test a glider from a pre-made design. Students use the results of their tests to design a new glider that meets specific criteria. Students build, test, and redesign their new glider as necessary. Students write a report explaining their new gliders design and performance.

Lesson 5: Rubber Band Plane Design

Students create and test a rubber band powered plane from a pre-made design. Students use the results of their tests to design a new plane that meets specific criteria. Students build, test, and redesign their rubber band planes as necessary. Students write a report explaining their new planes' design and performance.
